Book Announcement/review

I just got this announcement from Larry Ball about the latest from his consortium of authors:

Just wanted to let you know that another book is available on www.opensourcetriz.com
The name of the book is “Job 4—Simplifying”. It regards tools for simplifying or overhauling a system. The download is also free. A for-pay trade paperback will be available in a couple of weeks.

My advice is that if you don't have "Job 5--Problem Solving" you should get both. There's heavy, disciplined emphasis on function analysis, then on how to decide which of the options that you discover should be pursued in both books. The "Simplifying" book deals with both trimming, in the sense of removing unnecessary, wasteful elements of the system, and the more abstract sense of simplifying by making the system more ideal, ultimately merging with the supersystem.

Book Review: TRIZ: Systematic Innovation in Manufacturing

Please forward this to anyone who is looking for new TRIZ books. Thanks! TRIZ Journal is not publishing book reviews now, so I’m trying to reach interested people via e-mail and this blog.

I just got the new book TRIZ: Systematic Innovation for Manufacturing by San, Jin, and Li (all from Intel, Malaysia, students of Sergei Ikovenko. Book available from Altshuller Institute. www.aitriz.org )

Good: English is excellent. ARIZ and Su-field sections are the best I’ve ever read in one place. They make reference to what Joe Miller, John Terninko and I did about 8 years ago on defining the 76 standards, and do a good job of showing how to use the 76. Likewise, there’s only one tiny difference over the definitions of the 39 parameters of the contradiction matrix vs. the article that Joe and Ellen MacGran and I did (wow, 11 years ago.) and what they do is sensible—yes, I’ll have to get back to work to see if we actually agree, or if there were translation problems. They do not use any of Darrell’s stuff on Matrix 2003 or Matrix 2010 (he says he’s demonstrating that the classical matrix works 18% of the time and his version works 96%, but they seem happy with the classical one—see the summary in Toru’s TRIZ home page in Japan.)

Not-so-good: There are two very tiny case studies (a pin for alignment of 2 parts, and a threaded connector that is either overtightened or misaligned.) and references to some of the case studies that this group published in 2008. This is not the “numerous examples and case studies” promised on the back cover or in the advertising. The 76 Standards, the 40 principles, and the ARIZ section all need good case studies.

ARIZ-85C is used, with no mention of any other versions, or the new ARIZ 2010 project that MATRIZ is starting now. (This is just a remark, not a criticism! It would be nice to know what people who use ARIZ-85C think needs to be improved.)

BUT, overall my recommendation is that this is a very useful book, especially on the issues that have not been available.

TRIZ Japan News update from Toru Nakagawa

Toru Nakagawa from Osaka Gakuin University has continued his great work to tie the Japan TRIZ community and the global TRIZ community together. The following is his announcement:

The "TRIZ Home Page in Japan" has been updated tonight (dated Sept. 18) in English and in Japanese pages. http://www.osaka-gu.ac.jp/php/nakagawa/TRIZ/eTRIZ/

The Fifth TRIZ Symposium in Japan, 2009 has finished with the 137 participants (including 19 from overseas) and 42 presentations, resulting much success.

These papers will be summarized and reported on later.

[1] Japan TRIZ Symp. 2008 Presentation: "Updating TRIZ: 2006-2008 Patent Research Findings" by Darrell Mann (Systematic Innovation Ltd, UK),

The Author, Darrell Mann, has been working on the intensive analysis of all the US (1985 - today) patents since 2000 (initially at CREAX and currenly at SI).

The information extracted from the patents are used to enrich and update TRIZ knowledge bases, mostly related to the trends of evolution, functions, and contradictions.

In the present paper the Author summarizes the results of the analysis of patents granted in 2006-2008.

Analyzing 100 patents in the scheme of Contradiction Matrix, he has found the effectiveness (for suggesting appropriate/relevant Inventive Principles) of the Contradiction Matrix to be 18 % for the Classical Matrix while 96 % for Matrix 2003.

Recognizing gradual degradation of the Matrix, he is preparing for an updated version, Matrix 2010.

[2] Japan TRIZ Symp. 2008 Presentation: "Tributes to the Work of Victor Schauberger (Austria 1885-1958) with the Eyes of TRIZ" Wolfgang Sallaberger (congelo, Austria),

The Author of this paper is unique: Wolfgang Sallaberger has long been an owner chef of his restaurant and now becomes an independent inventor.

He describes the work of his country's genius Victor Schauberger who created the slogan "understand and copy nature”with the word "biotechnology" as early as around 1920.

The Author reviews Schauberger's work, which is not known well because of historical reasons, with the insights of TRIZ. The focus is the nature/behavior of water and its energy, especially in the helix of flow.

[3] Japan TRIZ Symp. 2008 Presentation: "Advances In The Application of Computational Linguistics for TRIZ Practice" James Todhunter (Invention Machine Corporation, USA),
Kiyoshi Shikakura (Invention Machine Japan, Japan)

Usage of Computational Linguistics, especially in the form of semantic analysis, is the oustanding strength of Invention Machine Corp.

The present paper reports the current state of the art in such an area, with an application exmample of solving the problem of separating sea water from sea weeds.
